September:  Career Center students learn about composting with assistance from Reevesland Learning Center's Joan Horwitt

Green Scene highlights a unique composting imitative at the Arlington Career Center. Using scraps of food from the culinary arts program, Program for Employment Preparedness (PEP) students are creating compost that they will use to fertilize their greenhouse gardens. Carpentry and Sustainable Tech students built the composting bins.

March 21 & 22:  Free organic seeds are ready to pick up!

The free organic lettuce seeds--twelve varieties!--have arrived for Ashlawn's  LAWNS 2 LETTUCE 4 LUNCH spring planting.

As we did in the fall, we want Ashlawn neighbors and friends to grow enough lettuce in their yards and gardens to serve a big, celebratory Fiesta Salad at lunch for more than 600 Ashlawn students, teachers and staff in early June, plus share some of our harvest with the Arlington Food Assistance Center. More than 150 neighbors, plus Ashlawn students, teachers and principals, signed up last fall.  We would like everybody to plant their lettuces no later than April 6th.

The main goals of LAWNS 2 LETTUCE 4 LUNCH are to help Ashlawn students learn about growing and eating healthy foods; to develop new collaborative relationships between the school and its neighbors; and to foster community-building relationships within our neighborhoods.

Please let me know if you will be picking up your organic lettuce seeds on either March 21 or 22--or, let me know if neither date is convenient and we'll make other arrangements. Thanks--Joan Horwitt (703-528-2646); shorwitt@aol.com

March 24:  Reeves farmhouse and Arlington County Budget Hearing

We're asking all friends of Reevesland to come to the County's budget hearing on March 24th, 6:45 PM, room 307, to show community support for the renovation of the Reevesland farmhouse. The County-owned farmhouse has been boarded up and vacant for 14 years.  But once renovated, it can be big asset as the Reevesland Learning Center where Arlington children and adults can learn about growing and preparing healthy food.
